Good News...Bad News...

So I get to the Showcase last night and had a great time. Got a nice plaque for getting an Honorable Mention. Cool. So here's the good news: The publicist for UCLA comes up and tells me that we all got a mention in Variety. Wow. Cool. Bet. Now here's the bad news: They fucked up the title of our scripts. See below...

Showcase for UCLA scribes
'Return,' 'Flying,' 'Swamp' among winners

By LAWRENCE MARCUS

Five grad students have been selected as winners of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's annual Screenwriters Showcase.
Winners are Eyal Alony for "Return," Andrew Cypiot for "Flying Start," Phil Guidry for "Home Sweet Swamp," Brian Larsen for "Saga" and Dan Mazeau for "Sirens."

Honorable mentions went to Yule Caise for "Snake Trails," (WRONG! It's called Snail Trails) Fred Hess for "Okisumo," (WRONG! It's called Muchos Problemos) Lori Palm for "Little Green," Lawrence C. Ross Jr. for "Superstar" (WRONG! MEN OF THEIR TIMES) and David Whelan for "The Thinking Tanks." (WRONG! PRICELESS)

Screenplays will be showcased June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Writers Guild of America West. Screenwriter Mike Werb ("Face/Off") will host.

Now look, getting anything, any notice in Variety is a nice thing. Not gonna get your script bought, but hey, it's still a good thing. To get your script title fucked up like this, and to not double check, is really inexcusable. But hey, c'est la vie.

Back to the Showcase. It was a great time. We gave an award to an alumnus, Scott Kosar, (The Machinist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Amityville Horror) who was genuinely choked up at the award. The screenings sounded great and were entertaining. We had a packed house. Passed out a few cards, but in reality, just was glad the quarter was over.

Wha??? Those titles aren't even CLOSE! How do you get SUPERSTAR from MEN OF THEIR TIMES???

I know how you feel. When my first short story was published, they misspelled my last name. You want to just shrug it off as no big deal, but it's just really careless of someone to do that to you.

Well, sounds like overall Showcase was a success. Nice way to end the year. I would have liked to have gone if it wasn't a work night and I didn't live so far away.

You know, at first I was just going to let it go. But when I talked to Yule, he was so upset by it, that I thought I should contact some folks and let them know what happened. It is careless and sloppy to send info into a magazine, and not check. I mean, damn, all you had to do was go to the UCLA TFT home page and get the correct information. So Richard and Hal said they'd find out the real deal. I think this has happened before.

That aside, a good time was had by all. I really like my class of writers. I'm always amazed at their work and I respect them. So to celebrate last night was cool, and not some drudgery with people you don't like. Come through next year and we'll save some beer for you. LOL

When listed alphabetically, as we are in the program, and also probably on the judging lists, your name comes right after mine. The script I entered into Showcase was called "SUPERSTAR", so maybe some columns were misaligned or something, resulting in my script being listed as yours.

Pretty damn sloppy, though, Variety.

Great to see you the other night, and also had a nice time talking to your wife.

Hey, I think you may have mentioned this when we talked, but next year on the judging worksheets we might want to make the Notes section mandatory. The notes is where we get helpful feedback, not that 1-10 scale. Anyway, best of luck with MONEY SHOT.

I am going to make the notes mandatory. All of the honors thing is cool, but the most valuable aspect of the Showcase is what people think about your script and learning where you can improve. So you best believe that I'm revamping that. I want everyone to get solid notes. Also, I think I'm going to clarify the 1 through 10 rating system. It's something else to do.
