Marquette, Michigan...

I'm not saying that Marquette, Michigan is located at the end of the world, but you can sure see it from here. I took an overnight flight to Chicago, then a puddle jumper to Green Bay this morning, and then drove four hours to Marquette, Michigan, not Wisconsin. I spoke on writing and had a good time, but I have to get back in the car in only three hours from now, and drive back to Green Bay to get on a 6:40am flight to Chicago, which will go to San Fran, and then home to LA. So I'll be knocked out on the plane. Ahh, the life of an author.

I went to college at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Freshman year, one of my room mates was from Green Bay, WI. The other was from Marquette, MI. Can't say I ever wanted to visit the Upper Peninsula of Michigan after meeting her.

I had a girlfriend who lived in Marquette so I'm familiar with the area. Great blog by the way.

You swing all the way up to Marquette, but will you hit the 80+% Black city of Detroit? Nooooo. There's a Shrine and everything that I'm certain would appreciate a reading/signing by an author of your stature. Speaking personally as a student at Wayne State and the president of the campus chapter of the ACLU, we'd love to have you down for an event. I'm sure you'll be caught up with Nationals this summer, but I'm saying, there's love for you and your work in the D.

Take it easy.

Hey all,

Still not home yet. I'm sitting in the San Francisco airport waiting for my last connection. As for Marquette, it was a LONG drive there and back. And at night, it feels like you're driving right into a Stephen King novel.

As for going to Wayne State, ya gotta know that Northern Michigan University paid an honorarium to have me speak on realities of being a writer. I don't mind doing booksignings, but from LA to Detroit without an honorarium and with my time constraints...that probably ain't gonna happen. But get Wayne State to bring me out and I'll be happy to come through. Holla at me via email. But I'll be at Nationals too, signing books more than likely.

Qusan, it's mighty bleak up in the Iron Mountain. I could imagine your ex-roommate. Thanks for the props THC!

Next time fly into Marquette! I've done the drive from Green Bay and the only good thing is Seguins cheese shop along the road. http://www.seguinscheese.com/ You can buy an endless variety of Wisconsin cheeses (including cheese curds—yum!), cheese hats, Minnetonka moccasins, and strange souvenirs. Marquette airport is located on a former SAC airforce base so it's kind of interesting to see what was built far away in the pristine forests of Northern Michigan during the Cold War. (It was the closest base to Russian, and B52s were constantly on patrol over our cozy cottage by the lake.)
